A Model for Church Engagement in Africa

Y- Malawi? - Transforming Malawi...Transforming You!

Africa, a continent of 53 countries, is in a crisis like no other in history. The small country of Malawi in southern Africa is one of the most desperate of these countries, yet is filled with a warm and receptive people that need the love and long-term transformation that God's church here in the United States have the ability to provide.

Who We Are

Y-Malawi is a groundbreaking model for partnership between a growing number of churches in the US and frontline Christian organizations in Africa, including World Vision, Opportunity International, Fishers Trainers Senders, Nkhoma Youth Department and the Chief's Ministry of EAM. Our objective is to provide community-wide, sustainable development and transformation in the areas of water and food security, healthcare, education, evangelism & discipleship, youth programs, and economic development, including micro-finance.

With a geographically targeted strategy, our initial focus is on a group of villages in Nkhoma, one of the poorest areas of Malawi comprising 42,000 people in 150 villages. This year we have added a similar-sized adjacent area called Chilenje. From there, through a partnership of 100+ churches, the goal is to have 10 simlar-sized village areas in Malawi to prove the model, then to spread to more of Africa through Y-Malawi's big vision which we call Y-Africa?. The needs in Africa are great, but with tens of thousands of Bible-believing churches in the US, we believe together we can make a difference that can literally transform the people of Africa and how our US churches are engaged.

What Makes Y-Malawi Unique?

Article Pic Y-Malawi's first area development project (ADP) is well on its way, funded primarily through child sponsorship of more than 3,500 of the village's children. The second area  launched in 2007. Using sponsorship of children children to fund ADP's is nothing new. Our partner, World Vision, has been successfully helping villages become self-sustaining with this model for quite some time. What is unique about Y-Malawi is our emphasis on the partnership between groups of US churches and the ministries directly involved within the ADP villages. Churches commit to an exclusive ADP to fund and develop. Together with other churches, they raise sponsorship support for the village's children, spread the word about the extreme needs in Malawi, and send mission trip teams to work directly with the village's children, families, and ministry partners.  (Photo: John and his sponsored child "Wynot")

This unique program of direct church involvement not only transforms the people of Malawi, but inspires, engages and promotes unity among the individuals and churches that join this exciting new opportunity.  These churches get to experience God's blessing through this practical application of Christ's Great Commission, to "Go", step forward in faith, love and obedience.

Y-Malawi? Here’s Why...

Article Pic
  • It's one of the very poorest countries in the world. Approximately 90% of Malawi's population lives below the United Nations' extreme poverty line with a per capita gross national annual income of $150.90
  • It's in the heart of the on-going Southern African food crisis. Obtaining sufficient food ("Food Security") is the #1 issue in Malawi
  • The HIV/AIDS pandemic is raging and is ravishing children, families, and whole communities
  • Malaria, tuberculosis, diarrea, and other health-related challenges are an equal or greater threat
  • Malawi has one of the world's highest adult illiteracy rates and half of its school-age children do not attend school
  • Life expectancy in Malawi is just 37 years of age!
  • Malawi has amazingly receptive, loving people. It's referred to as "The Warm Heart of Africa"

Christians Are Called To Respond

The Reality: The people of Malawi have many gripping needs and are hungry for the Word. Their arms are open! Their need is greater than anything we can imagine and cannot be ignored. The Opportunity: The right model, programs, and personnel to make a tangible difference are already in place in Malawi. We don't need to create a new model or program, but rather just come alongside our Malawi ministry brothers and sisters and help them expand what they are already doing.

The Answer: The problem in Malawi requires a God-sized solution. His Church is the only hope!
